Online training
making a splash

Puddle Ducks is an award-winning franchise business, teaching babies and children to swim. They operate a network of 40 franchisees, employing over 250 swimming teachers who are spread across the country, and teach 21,000 children to swim every week. Training their growing network of swimming teachers and franchise operations staff is a real challenge, both in terms of logistics and cost. Maintaining quality and consistency across the network is also essential. After researching the e-learning market thoroughly they chose us as their e-learning partner.

How we made a difference

Using a branded version of our learning platform, the team at Puddle Ducks HQ can rapidly create courses using a range of high quality content templates, assign them to learners and offer personalised certificates. The platform allows them to track exactly who has completed which courses, what their scores were and even their number of attempts.

CPD points can also be awarded for relevant courses for swimming teachers, which is important as it helps them retain their accreditation with the Swimming Teacher's Association.

Over 70 courses have already been created for the 575+ registered users, addressing topics from teaching techniques and safety through to marketing and operations. It has also been a great way to induct new franchisees.

Local franchises can also run reports showing exactly what learning their staff have undertaken helping them quality assure the work of their team.

The new digital training has significantly improved efficiency and productivity both at head office and at franchisee level. We are saving so much time by not having to co-ordinate training sessions and pay for travel, room hire and expenses; as a result, our network is saving money. People can train at a time and in a place to suit them and we can monitor it all from head office. Training no longer affects day-to-day operations and can be done away from swim teaching time – so we no longer have to cancel classes or find teacher cover.

We are now reaping the benefits and it is one of the factors helping us to grow our business faster than would otherwise have been possible.

Performance Development Review E-learning

A high performing university, Lancaster won The Times newspaper’s University of the Year award for 2018. Commended for its teaching as much as its research, the coveted accolade reflects the good work that is going on all over campus. That is certainly something we recognised immediately when we were invited to help develop an e-learning programme to support Lancaster’s new Performance Development Review (PDR) process for all of its staff.

We brought an external perspective and expertise to help support the Organisation and Educational Development Team at Lancaster and their wider plans to introduce the new PDRs. Using a combination of engaging interactives, video case studies, infographics and informal questions, we took existing outline materials and developed a learning structure contained within 6 themed modules. The modules are underpinned with the concept of the Golden Thread, which describes how the goals of the University are intrinsically linked with the objectives of individual staff members all pulling in the same direction.

One of the most important aspect of PDRs is to recognise and celebrate the achievements of staff. With this in mind we made the content upbeat, delivering the PDR concepts using avatar speech bubbles and a mixture of scripted video scenarios and video case studies of current staff who had progressed their careers through PDRs (with the help of our talented filming partner Mocha), ensuring that the University's people remained at the heart of the content.

It has been a pleasure working with iflourish. They have been fully committed to what we wanted to achieve through the project and have developed an e-Learning resource that is accessible for all members staff. They have delivered an engaging, interactive and high quality resource that is tailored to the needs of the University, demonstrating their ability to understand and translate their customers’ requirements. The end result represents value for money and I would be delighted to work with them again on future projects.

Making sense
of school data

FFT provides data and analyses to schools and local authorities in England and Wales. In response to calls from governors for clearer data on a school's performance they developed a new tool called the Governor Dashboard. Providing a range of information to help school governors support and challenge the school leadership team, the Governor Dashboard has proved immensely popular with governors.

So much so that the face-to-face training offered by FFT could not possibly meet the countrywide demand. They needed a good e-learning partner to develop online training and that is when they approached us.

Feedback from the face-to-face sessions was positive, so we worked closely with the trainer to replicate the experience online, putting special emphasis on the concepts that governors stated were more challenging. We also had to cater for the very wide range of skills and confidence amongst this diverse volunteer workforce. We did this by:

  • Using clear and simple language.
  • Explaining the key concepts and principles behind the dashboard.
  • Delivering the e-learning content in small digestible chunks, with each data section explained.
  • Using real data to give the e-learning a real world context.
  • Using a combination of animated interactives, audio and diagrams and questions to check understanding.
  • Offering personalised certificates to reward governors for giving up their time.

Using a branded version of our learning platform allows FFT to obtain feedback, track registrations and learner scores, as well as gather details for marketing purposes.

The e-learning is free to access and over 4,600 governors have registered already.

What have governors said about it?

"An excellent and much-needed innovation"

Managing director

We've been impressed with iflourish's high level of understanding of education and what governors need as well as their obvious experience in the field of e-learning.  We were able to work very effectively with iflourish to deliver e-learning modules using their platform in a short space of time. The end result has been of high quality, it's popular with over 1,000 registered users in the first six weeks, and has been excellent value for money in further supporting our work with schools and governing bodies.

Improved learning hub at the
heart of healthcare

elearning for healthcare (elfh) is one of the largest providers of online learning for healthcare professionals in the UK. With over 1,000,000 users and over 150 learning programmes the task of delivering such a huge amount of e-learning has always been a challenge.

Lessons learned

elfh had successfully delivered their learning programmes through a large learning platform for many years, however, in recent years it had become apparent that their audience demanded a much more contemporary and focussed platform. This view was supported by the huge amount of user data that had been collated through the support desk and programme surveys.

The challenge

After analysing user data, talking to healthcare professionals and tapping into the experience of the platform team, the direction was clear; user experience expertise was essential to deliver a contemporary, audience focussed, mobile enabled platform.

A platform for the future

iflourish is recognised for its expertise in user experience and we embraced the opportunity to design a completely new platform that would support a large volume of users and thousands of hours of e-learning intuitively and efficiently. The Hub was born.

Feedback from the clinical community has been unanimously positive. The user experience improvements continue to make a huge impact on healthcare professionals and support the ever-evolving future of professional development in healthcare.

Building a successful
childcare business

The Early Years Team at Bolton Council support a wide range of childcare providers in their local area from single childminders through to large nurseries.

They find that although most childcare providers have experience of looking after children, they often do not have experience of running a business.

They also get regular enquiries from people looking to start up a childcare business. E-learning seemed a perfect way to address both of these needs.

Meeting the challenge

Working with an early years trainer and consultant, we developed two modules to address the needs. The first module is aimed at existing childcare businesses that need help understanding how to develop a business plan and how to implement it. Aimed at potential new childcare providers, the second module covers all the basics that they need to know, such as Ofsted requirements, planning tips, resources required and where to get funding.

The modules use a mixture of learning assets, such as:

  • video of the trainer and a successful childcare business that has benefitted from business planning
  • interactives to describe key concepts, e.g. what do we mean by quality in a childcare setting?
  • templates and tools to help childcare providers put their learning into action, e.g. business health check tool, SWOT analysis and Business plan templates.

The perfect tool

Using a Bolton Council-branded version of our learning platform, the Early Years Team is able to track the number of people registering for the free e-learning and to gather feedback on what they thought about it. The responses have been overwhelmingly positive with many people asking for more!

Training for safer prescribing

Prescribing is a complex task requiring knowledge of a wide range of medicines and the diseases they are used to treat. As well as offering the potential for improving health, it is an activity associated with potential hazards. Research has shown that trainee doctors find it the most challenging part of their training.

The British Pharmacological Society teamed up with us, in partnership with elearning for healthcare , to build a Prescribing simulator to help trainee doctors practise these critical skills in a safe environment.

The Challenge

Trainee doctors are faced with real-life scenarios of patients presenting with symptoms and other contextual information, such as test results. They are challenged to prescribe the drug, dose, route and frequency to best treat the patient. Feedback specific to their choice, as well as a score, is presented on screen immediately.

With over 10,000 drug combinations in the administration system, delivering the right feedback and score was a challenging task!

What did we bring to the project?

The BPS had some ideas around how the tool should work, but didn’t know how to achieve their objectives. Starting with a consultation period, we helped them define the user journey designing each screen necessary and the functionality required to support it. This included a detailed publishing workflow in the admin system to support authoring, editing and quality assurance prior to publication.

We also worked in some innovative features such as flagging scenarios for editorial review when drugs are changed and also when multiple users are submitting incorrect answers, such as indicating the need to provide feedback on a misconception.

Publications & Policy Manager

iflourish did a fantastic job of accurately scoping out a complicated system, developing new features to make it work how we wanted and establishing the workflows for the different users. They were great to work with - really helpful, turned requests round quickly, offered good advice and were able to explain things concisely to a non-technical audience.
